Although a recreational marijuana measure failed to pass in Arizona, residents can still legally purchase cannabis products derived from hemp.
Arizona voters rejected Proposition 205 last week, with 52 percent opposing a measure that would have legalized recreational marijuana for adults aged 21 and older. This is the second time in state history that Arizona voters rejected an adult use marijuana ballot measure — the first initiative failing to pass in 2002. Cannabis advocates were more optimistic this year, with nationwide shifting attitudes toward marijuana and recent state polls indicating that this could be the year for legalized marijuana in Arizona.
According to Phoenix New Times, a large donation was made to the measure’s opposition campaign by Insys Therapeutics, Inc., a billion–dollar pharmaceutical company expected to soon launch a synthetic cannabis medication. Claiming that its interest was in protecting the public’s safety rather than protecting the value of its upcoming THC-imitation drug, Insys made a $500,000 donation to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy on August 31.
Proposition 205, the pharmaceutical company claimed in a statement, “[failed] to protect the safety of Arizona’s citizens, and particularly its children.”
“Our stance is consistent with our company’s goals. We strive to develop pharmaceutical products for the supportive care of patients while taking patient safety very seriously. To that end, we believe that all available medicines should meet the clinical standards set by the FDA.”
The money was used to purchase an array of advertisements that, according to AZ Central, “created a confusing vortex of claims and figures.” The ads also instilled the fear that legalizing marijuana would increase the risk of children accidentally finding marijuana-infused edibles.
Marijuana Policy Project Communications Director Mason Tvert commented on the significant funding backing the opposition campaign.
“They spent a massive amount of money on the most deceptive ad campaigns that we’ve ever seen,” Tvert told AZ Central. “But that’s how it goes. In 2014, voters narrowly passed a measure that legalized medical marijuana to assist in the treatment of severe and chronic pain, severe nausea, cachexia, Crohn’s disease, hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, seizures and epilepsy, severe or persistent muscle spasms, post-traumatic stress disorder, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma, HIV and AIDS. To acquire medical marijuana, patients must have a “written certification” from a physician.
Arizona was just one of nine states voting on marijuana measures earlier this month. While Arizona’s initiative was rejected, the other eight ballot initiatives throughout the U.S. passed, making it a historic election for cannabis. California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada legalized recreational marijuana. Voters in North Dakota, Florida and Arkansas approved medical marijuana initiatives.
All Arizonians do have legal access to other cannabis products.
