Results from a nationwide survey show cannabis consumers report an increased desire for sex and experience more intense orgasms.
While cannabis has been found by some to act as a sleep aid, the versatile plant is also linked to other benefits in the bedroom. A new research study suggests that cannabis consumption can be sexually beneficial for men and women.
East Carolina University graduate Amanda Moser conducted the study for her master’s thesis in human development and family science. Moser surveyed more than 800 adults from various backgrounds to find out if sex and cannabis mixed to create a more satisfying experience.
According to reports, Moser said her results indicated cannabis to be sexually beneficial for both men and women, regardless of age, and benefits can be found throughout the lifespan.
“People who were 18 years old had amazing benefits as well as people up to 85 years old, and everyone in between,” Moser stated in an interview. “All found that cannabis was beneficial for their sexual functioning as well as their sexual satisfaction.”
Survey questions focused on sexual performance and satisfaction. For example, one survey question asked male respondents to rate how cannabis impacted their ability to achieve and maintain an erection, while it asked female respondents to rate how cannabis impacted lubrication.
Other survey questions asked respondents to rate how cannabis creates a more pleasurable sex life and how it influenced body sensory, including taste, touch, hearing, smell, and sound. Based on the results, the participants reported a significantly enhanced sense of taste and touch.
Participants also reported more pleasure during masturbation after cannabis consumption. Moser’s research is slated to be published by East Carolina University in May 2020.
More research on sex and cannabis
A study published recently in The Journal of Sexual Medicine found that women who consume cannabis prior to sex have significantly enhanced experiences. Researchers in the study surveyed 133 women during their annual gynecology check-up.
Results showed that of the women who reported consuming cannabis prior to sex, 68 percent said that cannabis resulted in “more pleasurable” sexual experiences. In the same group, 62 percent said that consuming cannabis just before sex increased their sex drive and the pleasure of orgasm.
A 2019 study published by The Research Society of Marijuana looked at cannabis’ impact on couples. The results showed that when the partners used marijuana within one hour of each other, their likelihood of an intimate experience increased.
The intimacy events referred to in the study were not only sexual interactions, but could have been an interaction or meaningful conversation that involved love, caring, or support. The study also found when only one partner used cannabis, or “solo” use, the results showed “significant positive effects” on intimacy and in some instances even increased reports of intimacy.
Research from a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine found similar results in regard to increased rates of sexual intimacy. Researchers from the study analyzed sexual frequency in more than 40,000 men and women, all under the age of 30.
The overall trend showed that higher cannabis use was associated with an increase in sexual frequency. The results showed that compared to people who never used cannabis, daily users had 20 percent more sex.
