Age Demographics a Major Factor in Support for Cannabis Legalization

Younger adults are significantly more likely to support the legalization and regulation of marijuana, according to a new consumer survey.

Younger adults are more likely to be in favor of legalizing and taxing marijuana than older adults, according to data provided in New Frontier Data’s 2017 Cannabis Consumer Survey. The New Frontier national survey, conducted in partnership with cannabis technology company MassRoots, found that American adults between the ages of 18 and 35 years are 9 percent more likely to support the marijuana legalization than adults ages 35 years and up.

Overall, 55 percent of adults believe cannabis should be legalized, regulated and taxed like cigarettes and alcohol, while just 9 percent believe that it should remain illegal. Sixty-two percent of those among the ages of 18 and 34 years favor legalization, compared to 53 percent of those ages 35 years and older.

Younger adults were also found to more likely support the presence of cannabis and industry-related businesses within their own neighborhoods. The survey found that compared to adults 34 years and up, adults aged 18 to 34 years were more likely to be comfortable with a cannabis delivery service (49 percent to 37 percent) and a cannabis retail shop (52 percent to 39 percent) opening in their own neighborhood.

The younger aged group was also found to be more comfortable with people personally growing cannabis (49 percent to 39 percent) and cannabis being made available to order online (46 percent to 36 percent).

In the U.S., marijuana remains federally classified as a Schedule I substance, although 29 states and Washington D.C. have legalized medical marijuana, and eight of those states plus Washington D.C. have passed laws allowing recreational use.

The survey’s findings align with those of recent national polls from CBS News and Quinnipiac, which found support for marijuana legalization to be significantly higher among younger adults. A recent market research report from Greenwave Advisors suggests with growing support for ending prohibition, all 50 U.S. states may legalize medical or recreational marijuana by 2021.

New Frontier announced their partnership with MassRoots and intention to create a report that investigates cannabis consumers in April. A more extensive cannabis consumer data report is expected.

“We have been looking at consumer sentiment in various forms from our own national survey to our ingestion of social media from multiple platforms. Over the past two years New Frontier Data has been working diligently to understand evolving attitudes, perceptions and use of cannabis. This partnership will allow us to take that research one step further and provide the industry with a deeper understanding of this vastly complex market,” said Giadha Aguirre De Carcer, New Frontier’s CEO.

New Frontier recently released a more than 400-page report examining the outlook of the cannabis industry in the U.S. The nation’s adult use and medical marijuana sales are projected to reach $13.2 billion and $10.9 billion, respectively, by 2025.
