A new store near Fargo, North Dakota, will sell CBD hemp oil products in a state with no medical marijuana program.
In a shop in North Dakota, Vicki Schmidt plans to sell hemp oil products that are high in cannabidiol (CBD) and low in psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The shop will be the first of its kind in the state. Schmidt, whose day job sees her administering drug tests, says she sees CBD as a way for people to use cannabis without fear of intoxication or failing a drug screening.
Because hemp oil products contain only trace levels of THC, they don’t fall under the same restrictions as medical marijuana, which is still illegal in half the country, including in North Dakota, as well as at a federal level. They also won’t get you high.
“I don’t want you to be high on the roads while we are out there, and because of medical marijuana having such big place in our world.” Says Schmidt. “I felt I had to learn to better empower my clients.”
In a news segment on KVLY 11 in Fargo, Schmidt discusses how she came across CBD during her time at health and drug conferences for her work. However, it wasn’t until she gave CBD hemp oil to her father that her interest in the products became solidified. Now she wants to bring the benefits of CBD to her neighbors in North Dakota.
Because CBD hemp oil is sold as an herbal supplement, Schmidt won’t be prescribing these products. There is no need for a doctor’s visit or a prescription before starting CBD hemp oil supplements. Instead, anyone will be able to walk in and purchase non-psychoactive CBD hemp oil products from her shop.
CBD hemp oil supplements fill a much needed gap in North Dakota. With some of the strictest marijuana policies in the U.S., North Dakota currently has no legal medical marijuana program. HB 1430, a comprehensive medical marijuana bill, was introduced into the state’s House of Representatives but did not pass. CBD hemp oil gives residents of North Dakota a legal option for obtaining cannabinoids, despite the failure of the state’s legislature to authorize medical marijuana. Because it contains extremely low levels of THC, CBD oil extracted from hemp is legal to sell and ship to all 50 states, regardless of local marijuana laws, and to over 40 countries worldwide.
