New Gallup Poll Finds 1 In 7 Americans Now Use CBD

A recent Gallup poll finds 14 percent of Americans are utilizing CBD, and of those, the biggest percentages are younger Americans living in the Western region of the U.S.

Fourteen percent of Americans say they personally utilize some form of CBD product, according to a Gallup poll revealing that CBD has become increasingly commonplace in homes across the United States. The data released in early August shows the primary age group of CBD users is adults younger than 30 and the primary region associated with CBD use is the Western U.S.

The Gallup survey, conducted June 19 – July 12, found that people from all demographics and regions are incorporating CBD products into their wellness routine. However, the age ranges found to be associated with CBD usage and familiarity decline gradually in older age groups.

Twenty-percent of those between the ages of 18 and 29 years said they personally use CBD products, compared to 16 percent of those ages 30 to 49 years, 11 percent of those ages 50 to 64 years, and eight percent of those ages 65 and older.

Overall, 50 percent of respondents said they do not currently use CBD products and 35 percent reported not being familiar with CBD products. Of those 65 and older, 49 percent say they are not familiar with CBD products, while just 26 percent of those between 18 and 29 years said the same. This trend was also found in another recent Gallup poll on cannabis that indicated more interest among younger Americans than older adults.

CBD product usage broken down regionally shows that 21 percent of those in the Western U.S. use CBD products, 13 percent in the South, and East and Midwest respondents report equal usage of CBD products at 11 percent.

The author of the Gallup poll report suggested that certain regional locations may be associated with higher use of CBD due to marijuana laws.

“Marijuana use is legal in many Western states, and CBD products have therefore been available for a longer time to residents of those states,” the author stated.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in the marijuana plant that interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which maintains homeostasis or balance in the body. CBD can be found in both hemp and marijuana, and it is used by many as a supplement to promote overall health and wellness. CBD is non-intoxicating and does not cause euphoric effects.

FDA Works to Create CBD Product Regulation

Federal regulation on CBD continues to be a work in progress for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In December of 2018, Donald Trump signed the Farm Bill, releasing hemp and hemp-derived products like CBD oil from the list of federally controlled substances.

The agency is now tasked with the creation of regulation and is receiving more pressure to clarify the rules on CBD.

Earlier in August, congressional lawmakers sent a letter urging the agencies to hurry up and release information on the do’s and don’ts on CBD products. FDA officials are working out the details on how much CBD should be consumed regularly, the impact of the different CBD products, how CBD interacts with other medications, and the compound’s impact on children and pregnant women.

In July, FDA Chief Information Officer Dr. Amy Abernethy shared a series of Twitter posts announcing that the department is moving forward to gather information on CBD. The FDA is expected to release a progress report by the end of summer or early fall.
